The Confident Girl Reads: Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert
This week's review is on Rosaria Butterfield's book, Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert. In this book, Rosaria reveals the very intimate details of her conversion from lesbian, liberal, english professor to follower of Jesus. Her story is one that is unorthodox, but that's what makes it so good. Her story is one that points to the great majesty of our Lord and one that will shake your world. The recount of her bumpy past and miraculous conversion will be one that keeps your eyes glued to the page, but more than that, it will be one that inspires you to pick up your Bible and learn about the God that can make beautiful pottery out of broken pieces.
Rosaria is an example of one of those people you would likely consider "too far gone" but her book serves as a reminder that God is never done redeeming. Those that seem the most distant from the Lord and from following Jesus are sometimes the ones that God redeems for his greatest glory.
With an emphasis on genuine hospitality and kindness, Butterfield bluntly shares how her worldview slowly but surely changed with the sweet conversations she shared with a pastor and his wife. They fielded her questions with grace and had answers to the tough things she contemplated. As time passed, her life started to change and eventually she joined a church, got married, became a professor at a Christian college, and then adopted children of her own.
Rosaria's story caused me to love our Lord more, to marvel at what he is capable of doing through miraculous means, and desire to be more diligent in my extension of the Gospel. No one is too far gone and this book is a shining example of how God redeems unlikely people and how they are used to share his name in astonishing ways.
