The Confident Girl Reads: Sex in A Broken World
Sex in a Broken World:
This week's book review is on Sex in a Broken World by Paul David Tripp. I am a big fan of
Tripp. He has written a few books that have positively impacted my Christian walk so I was
excited to see he had written something regarding sex and relationships.
The description of Sex in a Broken World reads:
"Sexuality is a fundamental part of what it means to be human—part of God’s beautiful design
when he created all things. And yet, sex in our world today looks nothing like the way that God
intended it to be. Sexual brokenness surrounds us and, in one way or another, affects us all.
This sexual brokenness reveals our deep need for redemption—something quick fixes, mere
behavior modification, or a set of rules can’t provide. Honest and direct yet kind and caring, this book points us to the only place we can find help for sexual brokenness—the transforming
grace of Jesus Christ. Only this grace offers hope for a life of freedom, purity, and joy as God
Sex in a Broken World is a book written to align believers with a proper understanding of sex
and the context within which it should exist. I would say that Tripp uses this book as a tool for
introduction to the the topic of sex from a Christian worldview. This book helps to remind
believers of the context in which sex is necessary, but also serves as a reminder of the fact that
sex is a mere expression on earth of the pleasures we will experience in heaven. Tripp explains
the biblical expression of marriage and the purpose sex serves within that divinely orchestrated
In addition to a proper view of sex, Tripp relates everything back to the Gospel and offers hope
to all people including those who have fallen into the trap of sexual immorality. He does this
while at the same time imploring those who maintain their purity to fight the good fight and stick with it. Tripp is in no way inappropriate and discusses the topic of sex from a deeply spiritual
perspective. This book would be good for a young man or woman as they approach an age in
which sex is so prevalent and expected.
The information provided in Sex in a Broken World is essential to the Christian life and a proper
understanding of purity. I would say this book is merely an introduction and does not provide
much depth for someone who has had previous explanation of the meaning and context for
biblical sex. Like I said, Tripp offered a wonderful reminder, but I wouldn't recommend this book for someone who is mature in the faith and has a healthy perspective of spiritual union already.
It would be repetitious.
I do believe this book to be essential for people that:
1. May not have extensive understanding of sex from a biblical context.
2. New believers.
3. People whose families may have not been open about sex and it's meaning.
4. People who are looking for a refresher book on sex and its proper context.
5. Young adults who are approaching an age where sex is expected and prevalent.
If any of these scenarios describe you or you are looking for a good recommendation for
someone else, I HIGHLY recommend Sex in a Broken World. In addition to the use of this great resource, I urge you to seek wise counsel, get plugged into a Bible teaching church, and find
someone who you can ask these hard questions. It is so important to surround ourselves with
people who give biblical advice on all subjects, especially those that the world has taken and
distorted. Sex is a beautiful gift from the Lord, but only when practiced in the proper context. A
right heart posture and a correct view of biblical marriage and sex are essential to living a pure
and Godly life.
